Admittedly, I have been lazy on this project. My intentions were to setup a facebook page. I am thinking that you can get traffic much cheaper than going directly to your website. My intentions were to offer something in return for liking the facebook fan page.. then I decided that the facebook market may not be appropriate for payday lending websites.

I decided to try facebook pages for another product related to cell phone spying. Keep in mind I do not condone spying on phones that you do not own. However when it comes to the safety of your children or to keep tabs on your employees, I do not have a problem with that at all. I do feel however that you need to let them know that thier phone activity may monitored and you in fact are keeping tabs on them. They should never be under the mistaken impression that they are having a private conversation with someone. Again I do not condone invading people’s privacy except for the two instances I just stated. I believe in full transparency and the people you are monitoring should be aware of the likelihood.

I also do not condone recording your partners are spouse’s phone activity. To do so would be a violation of their privacy. With this in mind I put the app on my own phone and did a video demonstration to put on youtube.com. The video was reported to youtube.com for a violation of their policies. There is a lot of gray area whether this is actually a violation or not. I was demonstrating how in fact this is possible and was doing so on my own device. I appealed the decision and lost pointing out that google allows advertisers to promote such applications… applications that are clearly used to spy without the footnotes that I added to my presentation stating that I clearly do not condone this for any phone that you do not own. Google owns the youtube.com brand so I felt that this was a double standard on their behalf. There are also many videos promoting this same activity but for some reason they chose to strike mine down.

So anyway with all the setbacks with you tube not liking my video I kind of assumed that I would have the same problem with facebook. You should never assume anything but I really think people need to be aware of this technology. How valuable would this technology be if your child went missing and you had his or her final location recorded before the phone was turned off. Would you be so concerned about invading your child’s privacy then?

Anyway I’m going to do some facebook promoting via setting up a fan gate and a facebook page. I will offer them something for free in return for their email address and liking the page. Supposedly you can get visitors much cheaper by keeping them on facebook.. which only makes sense. So the steps I need to take are the following.

1. Set up a facebook page for the remote spy application. Don’t give me any heat over this… keep in mind I only condone using it on phones that you own.

2. Set a series of emails sent out to the subscriber list discussing the features and benefits of using this application.

3. Set up a fan gate for the facebook page… visitor will have to like the page then enter their email address to receive further information.

4. Set up advertising on facebook and see if they approve it.. don’t spend time with more than one ad in case they do not allow those types of ads.

5. Consider possibly not promoting the spy applications in and of itself.. but promote a page on keeping tabs on your children… something like ” do you know where your child is?” Then selling them the product through the email list… providing them hints and tricks on how to protect their children.

I will keep you updated on the direction that this takes. I am abandoning advertising the pay day loans on facebook at this time… or at least until I can find a better way to do so.

I have found that I like the security of PPC other than pay per impression. The average cost per click was over 3 dollars compared to less than a dollar using the PPC option. Granted, a couple of the ads performed much better, and I received a cost per click of 13 cents or better. I did a few things wrong my first time out and I want to go over them.

1. I did not have a landing page.

2. There was no direct call to action.

3. Did not collect any information for further follow up.

4. No “Facebook Fan Page”

5. Did not have sufficient ad versions for testing.

Granted, this was for our payday loan project, it is a difficult demographic…. and you don’t see many marketing it on Facebook . however, you can see exactly what we did by clicking the link. …. We are still experimenting with different things on Facebook…. but have yet to venture into other networks. I will update as we do. I have several networks that I have promoted other sites on successfully in the past and am anxious to promote our payday loan projects on.

Now I’m going to discuss how we are going to correct these problems and more importantly WHY?

Problem|Solution|Why

1. No Landing Page|Used a landing page I created with a wp plugin… this way I can have several different versions to test conversions.| Landing pages are important because peoples’ attention spans are short and it gets them to take action very quickly. I will focus on collecting their email address before continuing… I do this with my mailings lists but for some reason didn’t on the facebook ads.

2. No direct call to action|this is related to the above problem… You want them to do something quickly before they close the page out… you only have a few seconds to grab their attention. If you are overly verbose and provide too much information, you lose the opportunity to follow up with them. | The solution is to have an email collection form to get their email address before they get the next piece of information. Give them a little teaser of sorts, collect their email then give them the rest… This gives you the opportunity to follow up with them all on autopilot. It is important that you have an autoresponder setup before you start… I use aweber.com

3. Did not collect any information for further follow up| Also related to the above. I will put an email collection form or a fan gate on the page separating the teaser from the information they want… then we can follow up later.

4. No facebook fan page| This is important because if you promote the fanpage instead of your teaser page you can supposedly get the cpc down pretty low… at least lower than if you were sending them directly to the landing page… I’ve yet to try this but will follow up. Also, if you put a fan gate (they have to “like” the page before they receive any further information) followed up with you opt in form for further follow up… you can even further milk your advertising budget for every penny. Not only will you have their email address for further follow up, but since they are a fan of your page, everything you post will show up on their wall… so you have 2 different ways to promote… just be sure NOT to over do it and spam them with a bunch of crap, offers or whatever… be sure to deliver value.

5. Did not have sufficient ads for testing| This was a big one, I recommend that you have at least 10 ads and test test test| of course some of them performed better than others, my CPC was much lower on some than others… it was seemingly very high or very low… if you want to be on the safe side, go with CPC and NOT CPM… Better yet, set yourself up a fan page, put up a fan gate and extract their email before you give them any additional information.

That’s it in a nut shell….. Facebook is an interesting place to advertise.. I will be experimenting with other networks in the future, I will keep you updated.

Perhaps I didn’t wait long enough for results, but after blowing 30 bucks (I know this is not a lot) with zero return and a cost per click upwards of $3 I intend on trying other networks and focusing on SEO as my primary method of collecting leads for the site. I am not giving up on Facebook though, I am now going to use our remaining budget that was earmarked for the Payday Loan site for a new “cell phone spy” project that I have been interested in…. It is part of my “discreet intelligence” network of sites. This network includes everything from mobile spy apps, desktop monitoring software to background checks and reverse telephone number lookup web properties. Of course these monitoring programs are only to be used for legal purposes on phones and computers that you personally own. I have several desktop and mobile applications in this vertical that I want to get developed.

I am aware that some products perform better or worse depending on the market you advertise in… I am thinking that payday loans are just not suited for the Facebook demographic at this time… It may be too soon to tell, perhaps enough time wasn’t given, but I just had to pull the plug before anymore money was wasted. I believe the money would be better spent on an SEO campaign using a database of cities and states we do loans in. I am opting to not display details of the ads I am going to use on the “mobile spy app” but put them behind the members area. So if you are interested in seeing any of the ads used, places we advertise and the results we get, be sure to sign up to our members area. You can do so below…. you will then be redirected to the members area of our website.

Ad copy Two

Using CPC this time at 1.63 max.

Notice the christmas tree? I am going to try something different in the 3rd ad for the picture… I put the number on there earmarked for the Facebook ad, so we know anyone who calls that number will be coming from Facebook. It will be interesting to see how many people call the number without clicking on the link… I feel this will maximize our advertising dollar. The second image is of the final ad with what we are targeting… It is laser targeted this time… It still has a reach of over 400K.

This gives the breakdown of who we are targeting, etc. I am at odds as whether I should change the demographics up or not… but think I will leave them the same for testing purposes. As mentioned, I am going to change the image for Ad copy Three.

I went ahead and tried different demographics with different ads… will see which one performs better… I just couldn’t help myself. The link above is not live yet, I still need to get the data together… but come back in the next 48 hours or so to see a summary.. by that time I will also be able to show you the ad performance.. assuming they all get approved. It typically takes up to 24 hours to get approved on the network. I will pause the ads this Friday at 5pm for the Christmas holiday.. I know, noone wants to work the holidays, insane isn’t it? I know I will be working…. anyway, you can study this and come back to see the summary and results.

Ad Copy One

This ad targets users:

who live in the United States

between the ages of 18 and 64 inclusive

who are female

who like #Payday loan, #Pawnbroker, #Credit history, #Credit card, #Gift card, #Credit (finance) or #Financial literacy

I’m again using CPM, and see what happens. The only difference is I put the telephone number that I created specifically for the Facebook campaign. I have several different numbers for this campaign so I can keep track of where the calls are coming from. We came up with each ad copy at our business meeting this passed Sunday… spent about 20 minutes on it. Also note, that this campaign is not state targeted.. The final screenshot is below:

facebook ads

This is the first screenshot before it goes live on Facebook… check out the bottom from our results previous to our changes… very bad.

ad on facebook

This post is getting long and I’ve only done the first one…. I will put up details of the other 9 ads in another post….

Once we find something that has a high CTR, then we will try this other networks and see what happens. We will also try out hand at CPC… and see which one does better. Right now our CPC is over $3.

The last image is the final before approval. To summarize:

Highly target ad focusing on females who “like” payday loan, pa

wnbroker, credit history, etc.

The ad will be shown to 420K people on the facebook network. This will be interesting… I think I will use 10 ads for this demographic and see what happens.

After some initial research on the keywords below, this site is several pages deep for each one. Granted, this is not a lot of traffic, but traffic nonetheless. I show you this, because this is how quickly things change online (offline too, but that’s for another day). Although this is not a significant development in any way, shape or form, it is an interesting one. The point is: Keep planting seeds even if you don’t know what they are… and what you want will manifest itself from what you have done in the past, whether it be a few hours or several days/months. Myself, I am constantly planting seeds… if I can’t do it myself, I hire someone to do it for me…. a virtual farmer of sorts. BTW, I started receiving this image traffic within 48 hours of publishing the post with the image therein. Interesting, isn’t it? I am working on our Payday Loan project now…. As mentioned in the members area, it has been paused until I fix some errors that were made. Check back for updates…

Once upon a time,
There was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Vanity, Knowledge, Richness and Love.
Theirs was a contented existence until one day to everyone’s dismay it was discovered that the island was sinking. Everyone was told they must leave. So the feelings all prepared their boats and started leaving their beloved island.
Love was the only one who stayed, behind. Love so cared for the island home that he wanted to stay until they were sure the island was really sinking.

When Love realized that the island was finally sinking, he decided to ask for help.

Richness was passing by Love in a beautiful boat. Love said, “Richness, can you take me with you?” Richness answered, “No, I can’t. There are a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no room in here for you.”

Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by, “Vanity, please help me!”
“I can’t help you Love. You are all wet and will damage my boat,” Vanity answered.

Sadness was close by so Love asked for help, “Sadness, let me go with you.” “Oh…Love, I am so sad that I can’t help anyone. I prefer to go alone!”

Happiness passed by Love too. She was too happy to notice when Love called her!

Suddenly, there was a voice, “Come Love, I will take you.” It was an elderly man.

Love became very happy that he even forgot to ask the name of the elder. When they arrived to safe grounds, Love asked Knowledge who was the elderly man.

“It was Time.” “Time? But why did Time help me?”

“Because only Time is capable of understanding such a great Love.”

Remember that when things may look the bleakest, and when all appears abandoned, Time is capable of solving anything.

Things may not have a solution today, but tomorrow you may find one!Enough of that!!!Let’s make some money!! Check this video out, everything is not always as it seems. The world is truly our playground, NOTHING is impossible. You are only limited by your imagination, though cliche, it’s very true.

As you can see, we are paying a high of 3.27/click to a low of 1.71 per click. The clickthrough ratio is almost ZERO. This is very poor. Before the campaign started, we should have had at least 10 ads to see which one had the better clickthrough ration (CTR). Right now we are paying less than 15 cents per 1000 impressions, not bad. I am also thinking that not having a direct call to action landing page is also hurting… the less the visitor has to maneuver through the website, the higher the conversion typically. So this needs some more tweaking. I am actually going to pause the campaign until I create more ads.

Summary As of 11/13/2011 11:29PM

Total Spend: $9.60

Budget: $100
Total Clicks: 4
Cost Per Click: $2.40
Sales or Leads: 0

Status: FAILING
GRADE: F

Resolution

1. Create 9 more ads to test click through ratio… get CTR and CPC as low as possible. After 2 days, choose the ad with the highest CTR. Marketing is all about testing, testing, testing. The number one mistake was NOT creating several different versions of the ads before launch. Facebook is very quick about approving ads.

First off I want to say…. I am NOT going on a rant why you shouldn’t buy toys for your kids. However, it is my personal opinion that many people over do it when it comes to shopping for their children, significant other or friends. If I had kids (which I do not, but I have lots of nieces and nephews) they would receive 2 or 3 presents for Christmas if that…. These presents would be intellectually stimulating and not some of the “junk” that I often see parents purchase. I would start this from a young age so they would not develop a sense of entitlement. For me, it is more important that they live in a nice neighborhood and attend good schools, truly understand how money works and that they have options, options that they create for themselves given their resources. They would also understand that not everyone is on the same mental wavelength as themselves and each person needs to be respected for who they are, not what they can offer. They would admire and aspire to those who had more than they but also respect and help those that were less fortunate. I truly believe that everyone is not “wired” like myself and I can’t expect to fit everyone on earth into the same mold. Anyway, I would ensure that my children would never have to worry whether the electric or water was going to be cut off or they would have to leave their home due to foreclosure. Money can cause a lot of problems, these problems manifests themselves in many areas of our lives and in different ways. It all starts when we are young having a sense of entitlement… Some people just can’t be happy… no matter how much they have. So where am I going with this? Ask yourself the following questions honestly:

Do you find yourself broke after the Holidays or dreading the after Christmas credit card bills? Are you going to have enough money to pay your bills in January? Do you have an emergency fund set up in case your worst case scenario starts to play out? Are you free from “bad debt”? Are you paying a lot in credit card interest, bad check fees or other wealth killers? Are you contributing to your 401K at work? Do you worry whether you will have a job this time next year? Do you worry you will just get tired of even working or God forbid become disabled? Do you have a plan for your family in the event of your demise? I could go on and on…. It also deserves mention that I DO NOT begrudge people of nice things. Everything does not need to be an asset. It’s not always all about money, money, money.

However, if you answered the above questions in the affirmative, you need to be taking care of those issues BEFORE you go and splurge on Christmas. Have you ever heard of the Maslow Heirarchy of Needs? If you haven’t, check out this Wikipedia article then come back and continue reading… As you know, at the bottom of the pyramid are basic physiological needs then up to the top of the pyramid which is self actualization. Many people don’t understand this concept, but what does it mean to be self actualized? Well take a look at this Wikipedia article to find out. So what does this have to do with anything… especially Christmas? Well I like to call it our Maslow Heirarchy of Financial Needs…. and as a society we have it all backwards. Without getting overly verbose, we work ourselves from the top down…. often leading to bankrupcy… We often leverage our time in exchange for a big house, fancy boat and lots of other “toys”. But you may ask why is leveraging your time a bad thing? It is a bad thing because, like everyone on the planet, you have a finite amount of time. To get to the top of the financial pyramid you need to leverage other people’s time and money so you can do the things you want with your loved ones and those who you care about. You can leverage other people’s time and money to help those who are less fortunate. To many peoples’ astonishment, I am not a hard core conservative…. I am quite the opposite. I follow more on the lines of thinking with Warren Buffet. Not because he is a zillionaire and all that jazz…. but because I truly find myself thinking like him.. but in a different generation. I don’t agree with everything he says.. his word is not gospel… no one persons is. I could write a book on what I don’t agree with him on… but generally our beliefs are parallel to one another. So again you may ask, what does this have to do with anything?

Well, you now know that in order to be on the top of the financial pyramid (self actualization) you need to be self sufficient… leverage other people’s time and money to your benefit. Why should you go into work when you can get someone else to go for you? So you agree with that concept, yes? Wouldn’t you much rather be doing what you want to do tomorrow instead of doing what you HAVE to do tomorrow? There are people in this world doing just that… so how do you do this? More importantly, how do you do this AND have the lifestyle you want and deserve for your family? You do this by starting at the bottom of the pyramid…. creating wealth for yourself out the gate. How do you do this? BUY ASSETS FIRST THEN LIABILITIES. Whether it be education, books, people or real estate, BUY assets FIRST. Did you notice I said people? Yes I invest in people…. but that is another blog posting or book actually…

I REPEAT, BUY ASSETS FIRST, INVEST IN YOUR RETIREMENT FIRST, HAVE AN EMERGENCY SAVINGS PLAN FIRST, then buy all the cute toys and things you want to give to your kids and family… but only if you want to.. I won’t go into my personal opinion on the matter…. Don’t trade in your precious time on this Earth to give everyone else what they probably don’t need anyway. So you understand that you should buy assets first then work yourself up to the top of the pyramid, right? The top of the pyramid being avoiding trading your time in for dollars. So you may also be asking what this has to do with Warren Buffet and my comment about considering myself the Virtual Buffet? Did you read the Wikipedia article yet? Well I can sum it up for you…. Warren Buffet heads a company called Birkshire Hathaway , which invests in a myriad of businesses: these businesses include confectionery, retail, railroad, home furnishings, encyclopedias, manufacturers of vacuum cleaners, jewelry sales; newspaper publishing; manufacture and distribution of uniforms; as well as several regional electric and gas utilities. Got the picture yet? He didn’t single handedly start these companies from the ground up.. he purchased them and made them better… used his philosophies to milk every ounce of profit from each one… I can get into a long winded tangent, but I won’t. Suffice it to say that he did not know or understand the details of every company he bought…. You think he is actively involved in each of those businesses? I think not… that is where my investment in people comes into play… but I won’t discuss that here… I will save the topic for later.

So your next question may be, how do you become a virtual buffet and buy these kinds of “assets”? How do you get to the top of the financial pyramid? It is actually easier than ever before… most people fail to realize with just a change in their thought process how dramatic their lives would change. I promise I will wrap this up soon… You too can do what Warren Buffet does, You can buy “virtual businesses”… businesses that you may know nothing about… industries that may puzzle you… but these businesses don’t come with all the overhead of its counterpart in the physical realm. All it takes is a trusted source of information, due diligence, financing and escrow. It really is a simple formula, it does not need to be difficult. The problem is we only hear about how this person didn’t make it, or that person tried it and failed and every other negative thing you have heard about people starting businesses and the like. We only see the negative because it helps us deal with our own shortcomings.. we all have them. We are all scared, there is comfort in the mundane. There is safety in numbers. Dare to be different, do you want to be on top of the financial pyramid or stuck at the bottom? It is your choice…. but opportunity is everywhere. I present to you one of the many sites I study from time to time…. You can leverage other people’s money to create yourself a positive cashflow to invest in other similar businesses…. money begats money begats money…. Buffet often used the “float” provided by Berkshire Hathaway’s insurance operations (paid premiums which are not held in reserves for reported claims and may be invested) to finance his investments. You can basically do the same thing with the positive cash flow from your first investment to finance each successive one…. and it doesn’t always have to be virtual real estate… their are businesses in the physical realm as well to turn a buck… the whole idea being BUY ASSETS to BUY ASSETS to BUY “STUFF”… in that order… it doesn’t have to be complicated…. We often think that these mega successful people are highly educated or have some sort of “secret” sauce… they really don’t…. many never finished college… many are less educated than some of their employees. Do you believe what I just said? It is very true….. there are many people in this world who work for those that have less formal education than themselves. So why are these people at the top of the pyramid different? They are different a lot of times in they are driven to see possibility where others do not. They don’t take any one person’s word as gospel. They learn to think critically early on. Where are you in the pyramid? Are you self actualized? I hope so! See you at the top of the Pyramid if you so choose to meet me there… Assuming you don’t skip to the bottom of this very lengthy post… and read it straight through… chances are good that some way, some how you will do just that… meet me at the top that is.
