Get Rich Click – My First Online Store – The Day Finally Arrives
Yes, it’s true, this is my very first attempt at creating an online store. I have always wanted to… actually (cough, cough) since I first went to a spaminar from StoresOnline.com that tried to sell “e-commerce websites” for thousands of dollars. Since I am probably on every work at home sucker’s list out there, I naturally got invited to this free so called seminar about internet marketing. You see, I pride myself in my knowledge about marketing on the internet, I’ve been doing it for over 10 years now… so of course I was curious to see what they had to say. Besides, there was free food and who isn’t a softy for anything free? Needless to say, the whole seminar was junk to say the least, I felt so sorry for the people that they were sucking into their pipe dream that I almost lost my lunch. I mean it really was that bad. Several people dressed to the nines taking turns telling everyone how selling their wares on the internet has made them rich, blah blah blah… When it was time for the closing, people were lining up at the front desk to sign up for these multi-thousand dollar websites like they were at an alter call at one of Billy Graham’s revivals. Honestly, I could not believe my eyes.. I have to give them credit though, this seminar was in two parts… the one was the pre-sale where they fed you lunch, the second was the closing. They lured you in with some other kind of gift for the 2nd seminar. I guess they figured it anyone was stupid enough to come back they deserved to part with their money. They said all the typical stuff of the shovel sellers, ”don’t let other people steal your dreams”, ”don’t get into an analysis paralysis situation” Which is true by the way…. however they were using these messages to scam people out of their money. It WAS NOT a good deal for them. The only winner was storesonline. People were spending thousands of dollars on these websites that were worthless, just unreal. They offered credit so you could make payments…. the fees were astronomical. Think you will skip out on paying them? Think again, they will sue your a*&… I have NEVER heard anything good about storesonline (that I believed anyway) Go ahead, I know you want to… type in simply “storesonline.com” without the quotes of course… and you will quickly see what I mean. In the 3rd position is a scams bbs (bulletin board system for all your youngsters) where people discuss this company… type in storesonline scams, or any variation and you will quickly learn that you’d make a big mistake getting involved with them.
But anyway, I digress.. didn’t mean to go on a storesonline rant… It is just that I knew that there was something to what they were saying (there always is) but they were leaving out some important details and charging you a premium for something you could do for yourself with a little research. At the time of my run in with storesonline I was primarily selling digital information such as ebooks, background checks and the like. So the profit margins are huge and the overhead very low. I had hundreds of informational websites at the time making me a somewhat decent living… of course some did better than others, but that is the nature of the beast. I was well aware of affiliate marketing, hell at the time I had already been doing it for quite some time. Naturally I was aware of the amazon affiliate program, but I never did anything with it because they paid a whopping 6% of the revenue… so after I calculated how much I’d have to sell to make the same amount of money with my digital products I just ditched the idea.. going to the storesonline.com seminar helped me realize that there was something to selling physical products. So I started researching…. This is what I discovered in a nut shell (geez, all this before I even get to what I have been working on.. but bare with me please) .
1. There are more physical niches (as in products to sell) than there are informational products and niches.
2. There are more affiliate programs that cater to selling physical products besides amazon.com
3. People were secretly doing very well and I was missing the boat.
4. It was easier than I thought to create an e-commerce store using merchant datafeeds. BTW, it is even much easier now.
5. Not everyone is cut out to create online stores… storesonline made it sound like you could almost not know how to read to create and sustain a profitable store. This is far from the truth, you need to at the very least be FAMILIAR with basic html, ftp, cpanel, the difference between a windows server and unix, when you need shared hosting, a vps or a dedicated server, what bandwidth is….. Again, you need to at least know the basics.. the more you understand the better off you will be. I am not saying it can not be done… But opening an online store a lot of times is almost like taking a Calculus class before you can even add and subtract…. they were throwing people into these stores just to take their money. They were spoon feeding them crap and their customers were gagging…. thus the countless lawsuits and complaints the FTC has charged them with. They needed to learn the basics first. I realize people have different skill levels that read my blog… I skip a lot of material that many would get stuck on… But my point is, YOU CAN learn this stuff, you don’t have to be a computer programmer per se, but you need to start at the beginning.. perhaps first learning how to use the mouse and keyboard.
So anyway…. before I get off on another storesonline tangent… I learned that were was something to selling physical products online. I was so wrapped up in other projects that I put my ecommerce sites on the backburner for about 3 or 4 years.. until this year, 2011. I now have my first bona fide ecommerce site…. though I am not actually shipping products, I am an affiliate… so technically it is not bona fide.. but doesn’t matter.. I have one now. I am going to start marketing my store in the next coming weeks. I will explain to you in another post how I created the store and exactly what I did to promote it. So you ready to see what it is? If you have read this far, you must be pretty interested, eh? Well I chose MYGOLFOUTLET.NET as my first experiment having an online store. The goal of course is to have hundreds of these.. experimenting on what works best.. All this stuff is just test and re-test. You can NEVER give up. Had I given up, I would have been a flop long ago and still be working at UPS. I listen and when someone tells me something I often realize there is much more to the story… if it intrigues me enough I will go to the ends of the earth to find out what makes it or them tick. People don’t share everything they know typically. Some people call me an opportunist, perhaps… but I do know when something interests me it becomes a challenge to see how it ticks and how I can profit from it. So there you have it, MyGolfOutlet.net . There are reasons I chose this domain name that I will go into later… so be on the lookout for the marketing plan and how this site came to be… be studying it until I post again.. there may be a quiz. By the way, did you notice the title of the post? Get Rich Click? Well there is actually a website and associated book with this title. I urge you to check it out if you are interested in this stuff… It is primarily about selling digital products – which is my primary business.. GetRichClick.com
